Event information

This is the first of 'Hit & Run' - a series of events curated by Israeli pianist Maya Dunietz for Café Oto throughout April and early May. 'Hit & Run' will feature musicians that she respects and admires covering a range of experimental and underground music.

This is the first in what we hope to be an ongoing series of events curated by international musicians.

CHRISTOPH HEEMANN - electronics

An exceedingly rare appearance from German electronic musician Christoph Heemann. Born in 1964 in Aachen, Germany, Heemann began his musical work in 1983 as a founding member of the group HIRSCHE NICHT AUFS SOFA (H.N.A.S.), who released several albums of their surreal collagemusic between 1985 and 1993, drawing inspiration from such diverse elements as musique concrete, avantgarde, krautrock and improvised music. After the group disbanded Heemann continued working solo and with the group MIMIR (with Edward Ka-spel and Jim O'Rourke), the drone projects MIRROR (with Andrew Chalk), and IN CAMERA (with Timo van Luyck).

Heemann's solo compositions have often been described as "ear-movies", in which he fuses field recordings, acoustic instruments, electronics, and electroacoustic sounds into audio narratives. Aside from this Heemann has done a series of musical collaborations (with Jim O'Rourke, Lee Ranaldo, Charlemagne Palestine, William Basinski) and works as a producer (Keiji Haino, Charlemagne Palestine, Limpe Fuchs, Current 93). He has run the Streamline label since 1994.

MAYA DUNIETZ - "Music for Piano with Magnetic Strings" by Alvin Lucier

Maya Dunietz is a pianist, composer, improviser and singer, born in Israel in 1981. Her work ranges between solo performances, composing for various ensembles around the world, writing for theater, creating sound installations, building strange electronic instruments and singing in various styles, among them heavy metal, kleizmer and contemporary classical music. In the year 2010 her collaborations included arrangements for the new album of "Cheveu", singing with "Oy Division", performing at the Irwin exhibition – (Israel digital arts center) and playing with Eddie Prevost, John Butcher, Susan Alcorn, Heddy Boubacker, Steve Noble and John Edwards, to name a few.

Maya founded the 'Israeli cult' experimental vocal ensemble "Givol Choir" (2003-ongoing) and is currently working with director Ariel Efraim Ashbel on a new joint project to be performed in Germany, 2011.

“Maya Dunietz is one of the most gifted and resourceful musicians on the Israeli alternative music scene. She plays with local alternative bands including HaBiluim and Midnight Peacocks, takes part in John Zorn's Cobra musical game, leads the avant Givo'l choir, jams in New York with such forward-thinking musicians as trumpeter Taylor Ho Bynum, harpist Zeena Parkins and guitarist Mary Halverson and, in Europe, with Na Maquina Quartet, featuring drummer Steve Noble and bass player Marcio Mattos.” – All About Jazz

OREN AMBARCHI (guitars) & JOE TALIA (drums)

Oren Ambarchi is a composer/multi-instrumentalist whose work has mostly focussed on exploring the guitar - "re-routing the instrument into a zone of alien abstraction" (The WIRE). Ambarchi's works are hesitant and tense extended songforms located in the cracks between several schools: modern electronics and processing; laminal improvisation and minimalism; hushed, pensive songwriting; the deceptive simplicity and temporal suspensions of composers such as Morton Feldman and Alvin Lucier; and the physicality of rock music, slowed down and stripped back to its bare bones, abstracted and replaced with pure signal.

He has performed and recorded with a diverse array of artists such as Fennesz, Otomo Yoshihide, Pimmon, Keiji Haino, John Zorn, Rizili, Voice Crack, Jim O'Rourke, Keith Rowe, Phill Niblock, Dave Grohl, Gunter Muller, Evan Parker, z'ev, Toshimaru Nakamura, Peter Rehberg, Merzbow and many more.

Joe Talia is a drummer, percussionist and electro-acoustic performer based in Melbourne, Australia. Never satisfied with containment to any one style or discipline, he plays drums, percussion, amplified objects electronics and tape machines, composes electro-acoustic music and has performed with Robbie Avenaim, Anthony Pateras, Francis Plagne, Thembi Soddell, Sean Baxter, David Shea, Marco Fusinato, The Bartok Project, Rand and Holland, Erik Griswold, Adam Simmons, and countless others.
