Chris Ricketts + Anna MacDonald
Youth is not wasted on the young when it comes to Chris Ricketts. He has a heart the size of a concert hall, a generous spirit to match and a drive and determination that wills him to win. Which he will. - John Tams Chris Ricketts is a leading edge Shanty and Folk singer and accomplished guitarist signed to Hobgoblin Records. He has performed across Britain and the continent, in demand at folk clubs and high level music festivals. Being born and bred in Portsmouth, his music has strong links with the city's naval history and he sings versions of traditional folk songs and sea shanties (some well known, some less so) in his own unique style presenting the songs in a fresh new way. In 2009, Chris was a BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award semi-finalist (and named 'Best Folk Roots Act' in the Portsmouth Evening News), a year later he signed an album deal with Hobgoblin Records. In 2010 he played at several international festivals including Festival Maritim in Vegesack, Germany and the! International Shanty Festival, Bie Daip, Holland. As well as this Chris has played some of the renowned English Folk Festivals including Wadebridge Folk Festival, Gosport & Fareham Easter Festival and Sidmouth Folk Week. He has also supported Martin Carthy, Spiers and Boden and Little Johnny England to name a few. Chris is currently studying at the prestigious Folk and Traditional Music Degree at Newcastle University where he has further nurtured his great enthusiasm for shanties and songs of the Sea. 'There is no denying the warmth and general musical spirit that shines through or the ease and assurance of the propulsive percussive acoustic guitar work so confidently to the fore throughout' - Acoustic Magazine 'Good songs and performances... I can't fault Chris' guitar style' - Maverick Magazine 'Enthusiastic young folk duo doing something refreshingly different ' 'Clear-sighted and with a real sense of commitment to dragging this repertoire into the modern world, this is! a grower' - fRoots (about his album 'Simple Folk' with Mark Willshire )
