Event information

Really excited to have Boat To Row playing for Folklore again! This time at Jamboree and with the most excellent Andy Oliveri and Emily C Smith in tow!!

On a course ‘beautifully their own’ (Amelia’s Gregory, Amelias’s Magazine)

Boat to Row are a collective of instrument swapping, harmony sharing friends from the Midlands; meandering through all that life and love have to offer. From its beginnings as a solo university project Boat to Row has evolved into a band confident with delivering intelligent, intricate folk.

BOAT TO ROW - Beginning with the 2010 tape only release Crossroads to the recent multi format Grassmarket EP Boat to Row have been playing a rigorous schedule of shows that have included sharing stages with Slow Club, Willy Mason and Johnny Flynn. Gaining a reputation for delivering an infectious, uplifting set Boat to Row will be taking this on tour with Dog is Dead and to many festivals this summer including 2000 Trees, Truck and Larmer Tree.

ANDY OLIVERI -Growing up reading the lyrics and liner notes of dusty old records have left Andy Oliveri nothing but a storyteller. Echoing the spirit of Neil Young and Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, he writes simple folk songs with his heart on his sleeve and words from a bared soul. Evident in the stripped back arrangements of tracks such as ‘My Fathers Son’ and ‘What I’m Told’, the fragility in his voice and guitar allow the songs to breathe, with no overblown arrangements to mask the sentiment.

After a successful run of shows to close 2011 and debut EP 'Sing Mercy' released through istartedthefire Records in April, Oliveri looks set to be a great force within UK folk in 2012.

EMILY C SMITH - Emily’s music can be described as a cross between PJ Harvey and Debbie Harry with a bit of White Stripes, Patti Smith, Throwing Muses and Rockabilly thrown in.
Originally from Nuneaton, Emily moved to London 7 years ago having played bass and piano in bands back home. After the relocation she played gigs in South London at Andy Hankdog’s ‘Easycome’ nights, playing guitar, singing and writing songs as part of a duo ‘The Lorcas’. Supporting acts such as Heavenly Recording’s ‘Trevor Moss and Hannah Lou’ and Loose Record’s ‘Danny and the Champions of the World’. She has been solo since 2010 and has developed a style of song writing that is quite unique.
