A wordless, searing invocation for cello and strings. Following its premiere by Steven Isserlis at the 1989 Proms, it made global news. The inspiration comes from the Orthodox feast of the Protecting Veil - in 902, following an all-night vigil, the Mother of God appeared and spread her veil to protect the Greeks from a Saracen invasion.
