CHERRYHOLMES/ELIZABETH COOK with TIM CARROLL – We’ve decided to go ahead with this fantastic double bill. It means an increase in ticket price from £9 to £14. If you’ve already booked your ticket at £9 and wish to still come to the show, please contact us and let us know so that we can make arrangements for additional ticket cost. If you have no wish to see the double bill, please contact us to make alternative arrangements.
The six-piece American family bluegrass band Cherryholmes are flying in for the Cambridge Folk Festival and will be doing three or four other low-key gigs in the North of England. This is one of those once-in-a-lifetime opportunities to see a band like this in such a small venue as the Zebra Bar (think Uncle Earl and you won’t be far wrong). We’re taking a big financial risk, but you can be sure that when Cherryholmes return to the UK in 2009 they’ll be playing much bigger venues.
Cherryholmes is a tremendous traditional, bluegrass experience. This family band consisting of Mom, Pop, two sisters and two brothers have taken the American bluegrass scene by storm and are set to repeat that success this side of the Atlantic. Things have happened real fast for the Cherryholmes clan of Los Angeles. With Sandy (mom) on mandolin, the bearded and tattooed Jere (dad) on bass, Cia (23) on banjo and many lead vocals, Skip (17) on guitar, BJ (19) and Molly (15) on fiddle, they are incredible instrumentalists, plus they all sing. All six pull their creative ideas to form their own new brand of bluegrass music. Every member takes a turn singing lead and showcasing their abilities. Their live shows include twin fiddles, Irish step dancing, classic country yodelling, and old-time claw hammer in addition to their dynamic bluegrass. Now affiliated with Ricky Skaggs' Skaggs Family Records, the family have released two albums their self-titled debut and last summer’s CHERRYHOLMES II, that provides the best-yet encapsulation of the band’s talents. Throughout, the harmony vocals are resplendent, and the instrumental virtuosity is substantial. The high-energy band was named 2005 IBMA’s Entertainers of the Year, and have continued to receive many industry nominations and awards—including a Grammy nomination in 2006 for their debut album.
