One of the most influential choirs from the North Western USA visits Coventry Cathedral on Thursday 28th June to perform a concert marking the centenary of the end of World War I and dedicated to lasting world peace.
The American Festival Chorus (AFC) is one of the leading choruses in the north western USA, performing a varied, rich and vibrant musical repertoire ranging from masterworks, opera and pops, to gospel, American folk and Christmas music. It performs in Coventry as part of its 2018 European tour with its conductor, Dr Craig Jessop, who made his name as musical director of the world famous Mormon Tabernacle Choir.
The title, Over There, comes from a 1917 hit song written by George M Cohan to galvanize young Americans into enlisting in the army during World War 1 in order to “fight the Hun". The song is best remembered for a line in its chorus: "The Yanks are coming." This concert introduces a brand new Over There, specially commissioned from the American composer and trombonist Michael Davis. In addition, the programme includes modern exploratory works as well as folk and sacred songs from both sides of the Atlantic, among them A Pioneer Suite, also by Michael Davis, an arrangement of You’ll Never Walk Alone by Art Harris, Gustav Holst’s I Vow to thee my Country, the UK premiere of Jake Runestad's Nyon Nyon, John Rutter’s A Choral Fanfare and another well-known song by George M. Cohan, The Big Three.
