Event information

Iain Matthews first came to critical notice in 1967 when he joined the original line-up of 'Fairport Convention' with whom he recorded what was to become the prototype of English 'Folk Rock', 'What we did on our holidays' Departing the band in 1969 to form 'Matthews Southern Comfort' he secured an international 'hit' with Joni Mitchell's 'Woodstock'.

Establishing what was to become a pattern Iain grew restless with the restrictions imposed by a band format and, within a year had departed his own band to embark on a 'solo' career. Two years and two albums later, including the 'classic' 'If you saw through my eyes'. Iain formed 'Plainsong', with ex- 'Liverpool Scene' member Andy Roberts, and enjoyed further critical success with the release of his 'In search of Amelia Earhart' album.

Within a year Matthews was on the move again, this time changing continents to Los Angeles, where he established an artist / producer relationship with ex Monkee, Michael Nesmith, who names Iain as the 'founding father' of 'Country Rock'. It was during Iain's tenure in Los Angeles that he made a career decision that lesser artists can only dream of when he was asked, and declined, to join 'Steely Dan' - nice one Iain!

Iain stayed in the States for the next 28 years during which time he recorded a further 15 'solo' albums plus several within the context of a 'band'; most noticeably 'Plainsong' and the short lived 'Hi Fi'. The new century saw Iain returning to Europe where, for the next 4 years, he continued to work as a solo artist and in close collaboration with Dutch singer/songwriter Ad Vanderveen, and American songstress, Eliza Gilkyson. 9 years and several albums later finds Iain geographically settled in the Netherlands but continuing in his artistic restlessness which has, most recently, found expression with the release of his latest album, 'Joy Mining'

“Iain has one of the best and most distinctive voices in popular music, and also one of the most recognizable musical styles. He has written some fabulous songs, and turned himself into a bloody good guitar player. Of all the soccer players turned musicians, he knocks spots off Julio Inglesias.” Richard Thompson
