Pascal Nichols is a self-taught free-thinking drummer based in Manchester. Aside from drumming, Nichols runs Rayon Records documenting underground and outsider sounds, and produces drawing and illustration work for a number of record labels and for pleasure.
Berlin based saxophonist Simon Rose’s interest as a free improviser developed exploring the possibilities created by purposefully limiting himself to the alto saxophone. Rose has performed from solo to orchestras in Europe, US and Canada. Recently he has included the rich possibilities offered by the larger bore of the baritone saxophone. Recent collaborations have included Jan Roder, Mark Sanders, Kjell Nordeson, Simon Fell, Oluyemi Thomas, Klaus Janek, Liz Allbee, Steve Noble, Olaf Rupp, Antonio Borghini, Chris Chafe, Kanoko Nishi, Ava Mendoza, Weasel Walter, Damon Smith, Scott Looney, Pauline Oliveros, Charity Chan, Colin Stetson, Yorgos Dimitriadis, Jen Baker, Jakki Tolvi, Thomas Helton, Klaus Kuervers and many others. CD recordings can be found on Bruce’s Fingers, Emanem, FMR, Rayon, Leo, PSI with a forthcoming solo baritone sax CD on Not Two.
CD: Simon Rose ‘Procession’ solo alto saxophone (FMR)
2006
‘…‘Procession’ is one of the finest statements from the saxophone I have ever had the pleasure to experience. Over three extended pieces, recorded in concert, Simon Rose proves himself a student of history, but not a slave to it. Each piece is encyclopedic and grandiose without pretence, as witnessed in the opening of the aptly named ‘Ground Effect’. Marc Medwin, CADENCE, September 2007
