After a stint in a Maryland mental institution, former teacher Pat Solatano (Bradley Cooper) moves back in with his parents and tries to reconcile with his ex-wife. Things get more challenging when Pat meets Tiffany (Oscar winning Jennifer Lawrence), a mysterious girl with problems of her own.

Against medical advice and without the knowledge of her husband Pat Solatano Sr. (Robert DeNiro), caring Dolores Solatano (Jacki Weaver) discharges her adult son from a mental health institution after his minimum eight month court ordered stint. He has lost his house, his job and his wife Nikki but is determined to rebuild his life, remain positive and reunite with Nikki, despite the challenging circumstances of their separation and the restraining order now in place against him.

When Pat meets Tiffany things get complicated. Tiffany offers to help Pat reconnect with Nikki, but only if he'll do something very important for her in return. As their deal plays out, an unexpected bond begins to form between them, and silver linings appear in both of their lives.
