Golden Earrings (Fresh Sound New Talent Records), Sam Braysher’s
collaborative effort with celebrated New York pianist Michael Kanan, was
released to a warm critical response in September 2017, with glowing reviews
appearing in the UK, USA, Europe and Japan and a number of jazz journalists
including in their ‘best of 2017’ lists. Following on from their album release
tour last year, which included gigs at Ronnie Scott's and jazz clubs and art centres across the country, Kanan makes another welcome visit to the UK, with this tour also seeing them play their first gigs together on the continent.
Young London alto saxophonist Sam Braysher has
recently been heard playing with Jorge Rossy (of Brad Mehldau Trio fame),
Barry Green’s Sextet, the London Jazz Orchestra and ECM recording artist
John Warren’s Nonet. Michael Kanan is a real master with an exquisite touch,
a world-class interpreter of standards who has collaborated extensively with
jazz royalty including Jane Monheit, Jimmy Scott, Kurt Rosenwinkel and Peter
Bernstein. Golden Earrings, Braysher’s debut, features takes on almost forgotten treasures by Victor Young, Duke Ellington and Tadd Dameron, as
well as one original composition. The disc also marked the first time that
Fresh Sound New Talent, the iconic Barcelona-based record label, which
launched the careers of Brad Mehldau, Robert Glasper, Ambrose Akinmusire
and Kurt Rosenwinkel - had produced an album by a British bandleader.
Expect a fresh and swinging approach to the timeless material of the Great
American Songbook from these wonderfully melodic improvisers in an
intimate and conversational duo setting.
