When a man is brought onto the jury of a slam-dunk murder case where he realizes he is the murderer, he must decide whether to save himself by convicting an innocent man or to sway the jury to let the falsely accused defendant go free.
Clint Eastwood’s 40th directorial effort is a twisty courtroom drama-slash-thriller that finds a good man in an impossible situation.
Working from a script by Jonathan Abrams, Eastwood delivers a variation on 12 Angry Men, with a twist.
The film stars Nicholas Hoult as Justin Kemp, Zoey Deutch as Allison Crewson, his partner, Toni Collette as Faith Killebrew the prosecutor in the case, Chris Messina as Eric Resnick the public defender for James Sythe (played by Gabriel Basso), and also features Cedric Yarbrough, J.K. Simmons, Leslie Bibb, Drew Scheid, Amy Aquino, and Kiefer Sutherland.
The film builds to a conclusion that is unexpected but surprisingly effective in its understatement, suggesting that this veteran director can still find new ways to explore what everyday courage looks like.
