One of the world's finest finger-style guitarists, who has won a total of 6 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and who just happens to live round the corner! Bright Phoebus is delighted to announce that one of it's main collective members opens the New Year for us with an intimate, solo gig in The Backroom, to raise money for Alex Burland, a young boy in at Ecclesall Infant's School. Alex is a bright, happy 5 year old who has cerebral palsy and who could benefit greatly from a life-changing operation that is only currently available in the USA. Alex's parents and teachers have raised a lot of money by jumping out of an aeroplane - which we all admire greatly but could never emulate! - so this is our way of helping Alex and his family raise the £40,000 they need for the chance to change Alex's life. All the money from tonight's concert will go to Alex's fund and it will be a superb night of wonderful music from a world famous, local musician. Martin has worked with Jackson Browne, Steve Miller, Richard Thompson, June Tabor, Martin Carthy, Roy Bailey and many, many more. He has appeared on Later With Jools and last year, BBC4 broadcast a half hour special of Martin's performance at Cambridge Folk Festival.
With MC Jon Boden, front man of folk superstars, Bellowhead who is this year nominated for 3 Awards at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards - expect a night of fine musicianship and some great collaborations.
