Z'EV
Z'EV is an American text-sound artist and mystic who is perhaps best known for his work as a catacoustic (reflected sound-based) percussionist. His work with both text and sound has been influenced by the Middle Eastern mystical system best known as Kabbalah, as well as - but not limited to - African, Afro-Caribbean and Indonesian rhythms, musics and cultures. Z'EV does not consider his performances as solos, but rather as the unique inter-reactions between himself and his instruments; the particular physical space of the performance; the particular time and geographic location of the performance; and the energies of the audience.
While but one of the progenitors of the ‘industrial movement’ in the mid-70’s, he was primarily responsible for delivering the ‘tribal’ impulse and esthetic between the years 1978-1984. Generally most known as a solo performer, since 2003 he has been concentrating on cooperative and collaborative composition and performance, recording and performing with: oren ambarchi, hans joachim irmler [as FAUZ’t], david jackman/organum, jason kahn, kknull, larsen, franciso lopez, merzbow, bj nilsen, stephen o’malley, osso exotico, pita, boyd rice, the.bänd, kasper t.toeplitz, luc van acker, nico vascellari [as Pslayer], chris watson, and john zorn.
KATSURA YAMAUCHI
Katsura Yamauchi (b. 1954) has been influenced by the new experimental sounds coming from Tokyo, but had developed his own original style, mixing improvisation and minimalism with melodic elements. The music is at the same time challenging and easily accessible, unrecognizable and beautiful.
Katsura Yamauchi has released several solo CDs and recorded with Michel Doneda, Gunter Muller and Norbert Moeslang from Voice Crack. He's performed with Taku Unami, Jason Kahn, Otomo Yoshihide to name just a few.
SYLVIA HALLETT
As an improviser or a composer Sylvia Hallett plays an extended variety of instruments (violin, accordion, bicycle wheel, sarangi, klassikkemance, hurdy-gurdy, electronics…) and also works with various theatre and dance companies.
About the hurdy-gurdy Sylvia says: "It used to be almost unavoidable on the streets of London. It is a medieval one-man-band machine, enabling the musician to play melodies over drones and rhythms. Nowadays musicians use electronics to do a similar job.
In an unpredictable mix of old and new I will introduce the hurdy-gurdy to some lo-fi electronic effects."
