Maciej Obara Quartet
Tonight’s concert features one of Poland’s best exploratory jazz artists – saxophonist Maciej Obara.
A new project on the European jazz scene, the Quartet has received enthusiastic reviews. Unruly and uncontrollable, Obara forged a partenership with pianist Dominik Wania, who creates musical stories with equal energy and virtuosity.
Obara's music comprises rebellious energy and musical insubordination set within the mature harmonic frame of Dominik Wania's piano. With Maciej Garbowski (bass) and Krzysztof Gradziuk (drums).
"... jazz at It's purest: free, rhythmic, lyrical, full of soul and depth...Obara is not a screamer, nor is he a sonic innovator, or a musical iconoclast, and he doesn’t need to be. The quality of what he plays brings us so much fun that he should stick to it, taking the jazz tradition, with soul and form and interplay, in a completely modern environment. No pretence, just great jazz."
Arszyn / Duda
Krzysztof Topolski (electronics, percussion) and Tomasz Duda (saxophones) perform an improvised electro-acoustic set.
One of the best Polish young saxophonists, Tomasz Duda has teamed up with Krzysztof Topolski, an electr-acoustic improviser, author of soundart projects, drummer, lecturer and workshop facilitator.
Key concepts in Krzysztof's work are noise and soundscape.
...incredible improvisation and experimentalism reminds me of the Ken Vandermark duo sessions of the last couple of years ...Duda becomes more like Ornette Coleman with some really beautiful tone dialling and phrasing that may stop you in your tracks thinking there's a melody that's about to break out."
Jazz and Experimental Music from Poland is produced by Deconstruction Project – a non-profit arts organisation that promotes Polish contemporary culture in UK.
