We know how dark, dreadful and long January can be so come upstairs to the intimate, velvet-curtained confines of the Betsey and cosy up to the sounds of three wonderful storytellers, bands and musicians. As it’s the middle of the week, I’ll make sure it’s an early night. We’ll also put out the little round tables so you can have a seat to watch these charming performers. (I’m going to find out if the Betsey do hot drinks too – I bet the night will suit a hot toddy!)

^^^THE STARLETS^^^
We hosted The Starlets back in May on their way to Paris. They so delighted the Parisians that an open mic venue at which they showed up to do an impromptu set asked them to come back later in the year. And so they are! The very next day after this show, in fact. Thus, the well-travelled Glaswegians come to play an acoustic set of their enrapturing songs. Even though they’ll be unplugged, nothing can stop the brilliant fierceness of ultimate frontperson, Biff, who will make you laugh and squeal with his anecdotes.
To get an idea of their sound and style, please watch this video of their song, “I’m Your Kinda Guy” that I videoed at the recent Glasgow Popfest:

^^^ALLY KERR^^^
Sweet Ally Kerr often plays with just an acoustic guitar and his voice and that is the only way I’ve ever seen him. But for this night, his fellow Glasgow mates The Starlets will back him up, making a full band sound! I’m excited to see his songs filled out. Ally is one of those musicians who do very well in Japan and Spain but the local fan base is not as rabid. It should be! Ally is a genuine romantic and writes unique songs, sometimes dark, sometimes light, but always interesting.
There’s a lovely video of what Ally sounds like when a couple of friends play with him. Here he is back in 2009 in Barcelona accompanied by two big talents in their own right:

^^^GRAEME ELSTON^^^
I first came to the Pure talent of Graeme through his most recent full band, Slipslide. This is because I utterly adore nearly every band who has released through Matinee Recordings. And Graeme’s timeless pop songwriting style fits right in on that label’s roster. But this talented songwriter and musician has been in bands since he was a teenager. All of them have produced some real pop gems: Love Parade, Pure, Eva Luna and Slipslide.
If you want to read a beautiful reminiscence on a pop life well lived, I urge you to read this Cloudberry interview with Akiko (http://www.cloudberryrecords.com/blog/?p=1337), who ran Sugarfrost Records, which released Pure’s first single, Aspidistra (an MP3 of which is also linked at the bottom of the interview). In the interview, Akiko talks about Graeme a lot and her admiration for his talent and musicianship.
I missed Graeme’s set on the train at Indietracks this summer but thankfully a few videos appeared. To give you a taste of what he might play at this evening, watch him sing “Take Me Back To Ealing” here:
