TINY RUINS:
"she's managed to avoid the applied angst that so often ruins the work of British female singer-songwriters and created a debut album of vast beauty. It isn't out in the UK yet but, hopefully, it should be soon. If not, I'll spend the rest of the year making you all copies; everybody should have one"
Tom Ravenscroft - BBC 6 Music
"an absolutely gorgeous album" - Bob Harris - BBC Radio 2
"her voice, somewhere between Karen Dalton and Nathaniel Rateliff, is filled with contradictions - fragile yet forthright, vulnerable but fiercely determined - the lyrics allusive and elusive as dreams" - 4 Stars - MOJO
"one of the most sophisticated and moving albums of the year" - New Zealand Herald
Prior to the release of Some Were Meant For Sea, Tiny Ruins (aka New Zealand based Hollie Fullbrook) had been quietly going about her business in New Zealand for some time - building a solid reputation and a burgeoning fan-base thanks to countless shows both at home and in Australia that perfectly showcased her rather stunning yet subtle songs. However, since the release back in July in the southern hemisphere of her widely acclaimed debut album, the pace has certainly picked up.
Said the New Zealand Herald, "From time to time an album comes along that stops you in your tracks and demands you to listen. Tiny Ruins' Some Were Meant For Sea is one such record". Australian press were also smitten with triple j magazine writing, "Kiwi captures attention and hearts" and Mess & Noise noting, "the songs sway and heave with warmth and approachability".
Ever since a few tracks found their way to the BBC she's received regular spins on Radio 2 and 6 Music - so much so that the the album has now got a UK release after some incredible feedback from, listeners. It's recently been made Album Of The Day on 6 Music and was given a an excellent 4 star review courtesy of Mojo with the heading "Watch out Laura Marling!".
As a result of all this plans were put in place for a trip to Britain for a brief promo tour - plans that were ruined when Hollie was involved in a serious motorbike crash while on holiday in Africa that resulted in several broken bones and left her unable to travel. She's now finally well on the road to recovery and will be over in the UK in January / February for a nationwide tour after completing a series of NZ dates as support to Fleet Foxes.

MIRIEL WAGNER is a 23 year old singer/songwriter, born in Ethiopia and raised in Finland. Since age 16 she's writing gloomy Blues and Folk songs, stripped down to the bone. It's just about her airy but rough voice and a minimalistic guitar picking. Avoiding theatric gestures effortlessly her music has a unique intensity and emotional weight.
"...Mirel Wagner is the real deal, an innovator among imitators. In a genre ridden with cliches she cuts through with the sheer the power of her lyrics and intricately fingerpicked guitar. And that voice. When I first heard her perform at an open mic night in Helsinki a few years back, it was THAT voice that blew me away. Deep and dark, it is the antithesis of how a young woman in her early twenties should sound. It has those world-weary and resigned tones that make Billie Holiday and Leonard Cohen so appealing. It sounds like the truth...." (Jean Ramsay/Rumba)
".. In her words and her sound you can see a landscape lit by full-moonlight, fog swirling about like ghosts dancing a slow waltz, stately old trees hanging heavy with Spanish moss. You sense an eerie otherworldliness in the atmosphere she weaves, and you can't tear your ears away from that voice and that melody.
She has created something that you rarely or never hear these days. On the banks of the Mississippi Delta in the 1920s it might have been common. But the thing is, Mirel Wagner is here now, in the second decade of the 2000s, and she's from Finland." (Spydersden)
