On paper, it shouldn’t work: A dub reggae collective with folk and Celtic influences whose most successful album – the recently re-released Second Light – was an extended meditation on England that brought Bob Marley into the same orbit as John Betjamen, and even included a successful pass at a dub version of Vaughan William’s pastoral symphony, The Lark Ascending.
And just when you think Dreadzone couldn’t be any more eclectic, they emerge with Captain Dread, which is part sea shanty and part mad Celtic reel, complete with fiddles, “ahoys” and some truly skanking reggae bass lines.
For a band who have been going for 16 odd years they still posess the raw energy and enthusiasm of their early days; Dreadzone have lost none of their original appeal
It seems mad, but it works. You just have to be there.
