CELEBRATING SANCTUARY PRESENTS:
Krar Collective
The KRAR COLLECTIVE (aka Geata Krar Collective) are Temesegen Tareken, a former pupil of veteran Ethiopian vibraphone player Mulatu Astatke, on Krar; Robel Tesfaye on traditional Ethiopian Kebero drums, and singer-dancer Genet Asefa. Krar Collective perform dynamic roots music from across Ethiopia, representing various tribal traditions with a contemporary edge. Krar is the name of the Ethiopian 5 or 6 stringed harp.
The band developed through Genna Ethiopian Arts and Theatre (GEAT) and has performed at Womad, Womex and regularly at the Celebrating Sanctuary festival in London. They performed at Celebrating Sanctuary Birmingham at the MAC in June 2011.
Hassan Salih Nour
In support, we are delighted to introduce Hassan Salih Nour, an artist born in Gabet in Eastern Sudan, to parents from the North of the country. His upbringing included the local language and customs of both regions. At age three he was exposed to the tambour, the traditional instrument of northern Sudan, and began to play and sing local songs. As he grew up, he learned to play oud, bass and mandolin, and played traditional music on all of them. After becoming a fixture on the music scene of Port Sudan, he moved to Khartoum, where he studied in Khartoum Music Academy. For 12 years Salih lived and played in Holland, where he took first place in the Groote Brijs Van Nederland singer/songwriter competition, and has participated in the Mondial, Rasism Beed, and Melk Weg festivals. From Holland he moved to Cairo and is now settled in Birmingham. Salih performs both solo and in a number of collaborations, including Yorkshire-based Rafiki Jazz.
