Event information

The ceilidh revival continues with a fundraising night of extraordinary talent in aid of The Comfrey Project.

With Monster Ceilidh Band, the UK's top young ceilidh band performing a 'called' ceilidh, supported by talent from the US (Christi Andropolis) and the most talked about folk/blues act in the region (The Benwell Project), this is a night that will not only support refugees and asylum seekers, but will provide a night of entertainment that will throw off the shackles of frosty winter, and get us back to the garden, dancing as we go.

MONSTER CEILIDH BAND
Monster Ceilidh Band are professional musicians with extraordinary credentials: accordion maestro Amy Thatcher (Kathryn Tickell Band, The Shee) and the Scottish Borders fiddler Carly Blain (Border Fiddles) blaze their way through traditional and modern tunes underpinned by the unique rhythms of Kieran Szifris on mandocello and the dub-heavy electric bass of David de la Haye.

They've entertained all over the world, from the fields of Glastonbury to 8,000 people at the Rainforest World Music Festival in Borneo. They're on a mission to inject the traditional music of the British Isles with the UK's other great musical exponent - drum 'n' bass ... hold on tight.

"Outrageous foot-stomping tunes, mixing quirky beats and attitude. Elegant traditional playing versus raucous rave-like rhythms reveal arrangements to ignite the dance floor" WOMEX

CHRISTI ANDROPOLIS
Hailing from New York State, Christi Andropolis' musical influences are drawn from the Southern States of the US and the UK, exploring connections between roots music on both sides of the Atlantic. Her performance ranges from delta-style blues to Appalachian ballads, and includes her own original, earthy songs - effortlessly blending the traditional with the contemporary, and firmly establishing the breadth and diversity of her talent.

"Bold songwriting, a voice of unusual strength and some determinedly original arrangements... soulful, bluesy and a lot else besides..." fRoots

THE BENWELL PROJECT
Formed in the underbelly of the Newcastle folk scene, The Benwell Project are a five-piece indie-blues band. Sounds like a fresh dose of honesty mixed with the first whisky of the afternoon - guaranteed to move your body and sooth your soul.

DJ LADY KOO
Playing an eclectic mix of African, latin, Balkan and Arabic beats, Lady Koo is resident DJ at The Funky Butt Club, and has spun the decks at Vamos, Sage Americana and Evolution festivals, as well as working extensively in Scandinavia and across the UK.

DJ Lady Koo will be providing a women-only dance space during the evening.
