THE JULIAN MARC STRINGLE QUARTET
JULIAN MARC STRINGLE ~ Clarinet & Sax
DOMINIC ASHWORTH ~ Guitar
CHRIS DODDS ~ Bass
MIKE BRADLEY ~ Drums
"The best clarinettist to emerge in British jazz for decades" ~ Sir John Dankworth.
Fleece Jazz welcomes back Julian after an inexplicably long gap. As he moves from harmonious melodies to up-beat, funkier grooves his relaxed and very approachable style continue to bring pleasure as he assuredly switches from clarinet to sax with occasional vocal.
Juilan was a child prodigy reed player. He was educated at the Latymer School and the London College of Music where he studied Clarinet with Wilf Keeley and Composition with William Lloyd Webber. He formed his first band aged just12 and first appeared on T.V. with 'Acker' Bilk, two years later in a trad band which included Richard and Neil Sidwell, Paul Clarvis and Andy Cleyndert..
At 17 he formed a Modern Jazz quintet and toured Europe with Dave Cliff, Nick Weldon, Andy Cleyndert and Mark Taylor. Since then he has worked with an extremely impressive list of musicians ranging from Peanuts Hucko, Don Lusher, Kenny Baker, Cleo Lane & Sir John Dankworth, John Parricelli, Jim Mullen, and Tommy Whittle to (and I am not sure I should mention these) Joe Brown, Chas & Dave, the Spice Girls and Meatloaf!
Tonight we have his own exciting and melodic Latin-influenced jazz funk band featuring versatile and talented Canadian guitarist Dominic Ashworth, bass ace Chris Dodd and drummer Mike Bradley (on day release from Sax Appeal or The Zappistas?).
I used to have a serious aversion to the clarinet due, perhaps, to a surfeit of stripey waistcoats and unnecessary twee twiddly bits, then I heard Julian and realised that, in the right hands, it can be a fine instrument not so very far from the saxophone. Julian’s highly melodic music and unique sound reaches the younger audience while his soul, original writing and phenomenal technique on his instrument excites the jazz aficionados. Do come and (re-)discover one of the very best clarinettists around.
