PHRONESIS
JASPER HOIBY ~ Bass
IVO NEAME ~ Piano
ANTON EGER ~ Drums
Take a Danish bassist, an English pianist and a Swedish drummer and what do you get? Answer: practical wisdom, intelligence or prudence, or more exactly, "Phronesis," the band currently attracting more superlatives than any other in the jazz world.
Copenhagen-born, London-based, bassist Jasper Høiby created Phronesis in 2005, following his graduation from the Royal Academy of Music in London. His debut at Fleece Jazz was in 2009 with Mark Lockheart. He returned the following year with Jim Hart's Gemini and Ivo Neame and in 2011 with Phronesis for a gig which confirmed the Jazzwise observation that they are "one of the most exciting bands on the planet today."
In 2010 Phronesis were receiving prestigious award nominations and scoring huge sucesses in Brecon, London, Glasgow, Paris, Copenhagen and The North Sea Jazz festivals. These were consolidated the following year when they received outstanding receptions in Montreal, Ottowa, New York, & the Fleece! If you missed their last appearance, you'd better come this time!
Their recordings have been equally acclaimed. Organic Warfare in 2007 was followed by Green Delay which was showcased by The Guardian, The Times and joined the Jazzwise top 10 for 2009. Album three, Alive, achieved even greater things, including 'album of the year' from both Jazzwise and Mojo. The latest recording, Walking Dark, has just been released and the launch tour takes in Germany, The Netherlands, France, Belgium, Spain and, of course, Fleece Jazz.
All 3 members of the trio contributed to the writing and arranging and Daniel Spicer, reviewing for the BBC finds "Hoiby, Neame and Eger might soon be very big names indeed" He hears "complex, tumbling riffs played with irresistible, headlong momentum and leaping joie de vivre....the album could stand as a definitive statement of close musical comradeship" reminiscent of EST, perhaps?
"This scorching set fizzes with ...engery replete with sunny Mediterranean Brazilian flouishes and depth-charge baselines" ~ Time Out JOIN THE PARTY AT FLEECE JAZZ!
"Look out for Phronesis - they might change your life!" ~ Sean Rafferty, BBC Radio 3
