Bobby Wellins Quartet
Jazz in the Loft@The Cellar
Monday 16 July
8:30pm-11:00pm
Apart from the fact that his playing has been of a uniformly high standard since he first played with Stan Tracey over fifty years ago what more is there left to be said about the most popular tenor saxophonist in Britain today?
Well, how about the recognition of this in his winning Jazz Musician of the Year in the 2012 Parliamentary Jazz Awards, sponsored by Jazz Services. This year’s awards saw the highest ever number of voters from the great jazz-loving British public registering to nominate worthy recipients in what are now the UK’s premier jazz awards.
Part of the citation for this award read, “Renowned for his fluent technique and the mournful tenderness of his tenor-sax tone, this tough wee Glaswegian has become a national institution…..critics and fans agree that he is playing as well as at any other time in a remarkable six decades in the vanguard of British jazz.”
As if to underline all this his latest CD, “Time Gentlemen, Please”, a collection of standards, some well known others less so, has garnered high praise among the jazz critics.
