VOICES OF 2012
Three generations of contemporary composers from England, Australia and USA
Including John Tavener's 'Song for Athene', and works by Bob Chilcott, Roger Marsh, Kerry Andrew, David Power, Philip Glass, David Lumsdaine, Paul Stanhope and Morten Lauridsen
Sam Laughton, the Elysian's musical director, writes: "It is often forgotten that composers apparently 'contemporary' with one another are often from vastly separated generations, giving them very different perspectives on today's world, whether musical or otherwise. We celebrate that chronological diversity, with composers born as far apart as 1931 and 1978 and many in between. Another diversity is geographical, stretching from the American West Coast to Sydney, Australia, and in the UK from London to York (a hotbed of contemporary composition). Capping all this is the multitude of musical styles on offer, from the modernists to the minimalists (holy or otherwise), and from the most well-known names to the newest kids on the block. Please come and taste these wonderful wares!"
