LUX presents the London premiere of Anne-Marie Copestake’s new Margaret Tait Award film commission, And Under That with a live soundtrack by Stevie Jones and Jer Reid followed by a set by Glasgow’s Muscles of Joy, an all-female vocal-led septet of which Copestake is a member.

AND UNDER THAT

And Under That (2012) combines footage and sounds surrounding two women - a portrait through the act of looking, finding, and listening. Emerging themes are legacies and patterns of so-called emancipation. The women vocalise fragmented language built from ideas, questions, observations, histories uncovered, history’s subjective nature, moments of alienation, female voices of authority, and resisting completion. The language explores particular environments and histories. The film develops associations and a scenario wherein questioning and ideas come from older women, unfinished and with possibilities to explore.

STEVIE JONES AND JER REID

Stevie Jones is a musician, composer, and sound engineer based in Glasgow. He plays and records under the name Rude Pravo with artists Luke Fowler and Cara Tolmie, and currently plays double bass and piano as well as arranges and engineers as part of the Alasdair Roberts band and Bill Wells/Aidan Moffat quartet.

He has toured extensively throughout Europe, Scandinavia, America, Canada and Japan. Previous bands he has played with include El Hombre Trajeado and Arab Strap. He has previously collaborated on music and soundtracks for film and video works with artists Steve Sutcliffe and Anne-Marie Copestake, and film maker Lucille Desamoury.

Jones is currently working on recordings for a forthcoming solo album, to be released in 2013.

Jer Reid is a musician based in Glasgow. He played in several guitar bands in the early 1990's, including 'dawson', and with Craig Flanagin. More recently Reid has increasingly focused on improvisation, with various musicians including Luke Sutherland and Fritz Welch, and with dancers including Rosalind Masson, Kirstie Simson and Solène Weinachter.

During December 2010 to January 2011, in a project titled ‘Winter Cycle’, Reid played 31 consecutive gigs, each one as a different duo, in Stereo, Glasgow.

Stevie Jones and Jer Reid have previously played live as an improvising duo and as part of larger groups of improvisers including Burghead, with RM Hubbert and Ben Reynolds and others. They have also played together on composed pieces for four electric guitars and a dancer, called From Home.

In August 2012 Stevie Jones and Jer Reid released an album together as Sycamore and Friends, with drummer and percussionist Shane Connolly of Tattie Toes and The One Ensemble. On the Sycamore album they also collaborate with musicians Daniel Padden, Sarah Kenchington and Bill Wells amongst others. The album is released as a CD by Ubisano.

MUSCLES OF JOY

Muscles of Joy formed in Glasgow in 2008. The bands approach to music making is intuitive exploring voice, rhythm, and melody. Their process of creating music through improvisation has led to a distinctive sound offering a particular perspective. This working process has also directly informed the series of unique cues that the band have evolved and use in their performances, moving the music forward from one state to the next. An important focus from the outset was in employing each band members voice in creating music: exploring vocal sound through vocables and repetition; exploring use of language in lyric form; and at the same time developing individual and inventive approaches to instrumentation.

Muscles of Joy have performed widely at venues across Scotland, a short tour of the USA, and have most recently played at Made Festival, Umea, Sweden; Oran Mor, Glasgow, and in Summerhall, Edinburgh for the Edinburgh Art Festival, August 2012.

Muscles of Joy released their debut album November 2011, on Watts of Goodwill label, in a varied edition of screen printed and laser cut sleeves.
