William Byrd (c1540-1623) was the greatest English composer of his time and arguably of all time. In this programme the Ripieno Choir sings the riches of his Mass for Five Voices, alongside music from earlier generations - a group of motets by Thomas Tallis and the spectacular late medieval polyphony of John Browne’s Stabat Mater, the finest work in the famous Eton Choir Book. This piece has aptly been described as an audible cathedral. The programme also includes the famous setting of the Miserere by Gregorio Allegri, complete with its dizzying high Cs.
