FIGHT LIKE APES
Fight Like Apes are are a woman fronted Irish alternative rock band formed in Dublin in 2006. they have toured the UK with The Von Bondies, The Ting Tings, The Prodigy and Kasabian and have played several Irish and European festivals throughout their career. Their members are Mary-Kate "MayKay" Geraghty (vocals and synth), Jamie "Pockets" Fox (keyboard and vocals), Tom Ryan (bass) and Adrian Mullan (drums). They are known for their elongated record titles, usually inspired by B movies.
Taking influence from sources as diverse as alt-rock luminaries Pixies, Welsh underground punk legends Mclusky, and the short-lived teen sitcom California Dreams, Fight Like Apes' music is defined by sharply distorted synths, the complete absence of guitars, and singer Maykay's shrill tones and pop culture-referencing lyricism. Their brash pop sensibilities have seen them likened to U.K. acts Los Campesinos! and Johnny Foreigner, as well as defunct U.S. rockers Be Your Own Pet.
Mary-Kate Geraghty (or 'MayKay') is an intriguing character. In terms of her vocal range, its subtle but destroying timbre, and her first-crush looks, it's easy to imagine her as a chart-topping pop diva, stealing the hearts and minds of a million teenage fans.
Instead, we find her fronting Irish keyboard-trashing outfit Fight Like Apes, wrestling her bandmates to the floor and throwing out more curses than Kanye West. It's hardly pop's perfect dream, but it's a role that she fills with brilliance and belief.
