Vondelpark's forthcoming debut album Seabed-- due out on R&S April 1-- is anything but bombastic; across 10 gloriously smooth tracks, Rainsbury-- along with bandmates Alex Bailey (guitar/bass) and Matt Law (keyboards)-- builds velvety lushness with an expert's patience. Drawing inspiration from Arthur Russell, Barry White, Herbie Hancock, and Philly soul architect/jazz explorer Dexter Wansel, the trio have homed in on their current impressionistic brand of R&B after playing music together over the last eight years. After starting out as a noisy My Bloody Valentine-type band in the London suburb of Surrey, they slowly morphed into Vondelpark, and have since release two EPs, 2010's Sauna and 2011's NYC Stuff and NYC Bags. You can hear their progression over the last three years by comparing the original 2010 version of their song "California Analog Dream" with its new and dramatically improved Seabed incarnation.
