It's 2009 and I'm looking through a few things and notice that there's a chap called Bob Lind playing a festival date. Crikey, think I - Bob Lind! So, I email the fellow immediately and, next thing, I've sorted a club date for Bob here in sunny Brighton. It was one of those daft moments that I certainly don't regret. His show at The Hanbury (also the first time I booked the wondrous Caitlin Stubbs) remains, for me, one of the very, very best that I've put on.
A major songwriter, his songs have been covered by over 200 artists, from Aretha Franklin, Sonny And Cher, Marianne Faithfull, Richie Havens, The Four Tops, Eric Clapton... to Tony Blackburn!
Bob Lind found fame and success, in the mid 60's on the West coast, hanging out with acts like Buffalo Springfield. Then he turned his back on it all, sort of disappeared for decades, a cult figure name-checked by Pulp in 'Bob Lind (The Only Way Is Down'. Living quietly in Florida, Bob became a successful novelist, writer and playwright decades before being enticed back into performing a few years back by his chum Arlo Guthrie. Since then Bob has returned to the stage, playing select club and theatre dates. Championed here in Britain by Richard Hawley and Jarvis Cocker. With new recordings, including his latest acclaimed album 'Finding You Again', Bob's flame is well and truly relit.
Maybe you'll know 'Cheryl's Goin' Home', a hit for Adam Faith that Otway & Barratt found fame with - which became part of 'Cheryl' the rock opera written by John Otway with local boy Attila The Stockbroker. Bob's first UK visit coincided with his first UK top 5 hit in 1966, though another artist, Val Doonican, vied with him in the charts with the same record... If all you remember of Bob Lind is that bright 'Elusive Butterfly' of love, you're going to be pretty dashed amazed by the wealth of beautiful songs Bob has written and bowled over by his mesmerising performance.
He's back in UK, playing again at The End Of The Road Festival and staying over to play a very few dates before performing in Spain.
It's Bob's request to return to Brighton (and more fish'n'chips on the pier?). It's my privilege to say 'yes'. We're not going for a big venue. This one is designed for the intimacy of The Greys. You'd better buy your tickets quick.
On top of all this, in truth, Bob Lind is a real gent. And I'm really so excited that Bob's coming back.
