This programme has everything - inventive and imaginative music by three outstanding composers on top form and magnificent poetry (by George Herbert, WH Auden and Ursula Vaughan Williams as well as the prolific Anon.). In the week of his centenary Benjamin Britten is naturally the most prominent in music ranging from the quasi-medieval Hymn to the Virgin, written while he was still at school, through the frisky Jubilate, composed for St George's Chapel, Windsor at the request of the Duke of Edinburgh, to the mature Antiphon, a relatively little-known work of sheer genius.
The music of Herbert Howells and Kenneth Leighton, who died 30 and 25 years ago respectively, offers complementary views of the same or similar texts. Howell's "Gloucester Service" is among the very finest of his many contributions to the repertoire of cathedral music, while the jazzy rhythms of Leighton's "Let all the world in every corner sing" are highly infectious.
