For the second screening of films selected from this year’s London Kurdish Film Festival The Mosaic Rooms is delighted to present the following short film, followed by an acclaimed feature film:
BICYCLE (17 mins)
To make ends meet, Hajar and his friends sell scrap metal. Even the simple dream of owning a bicycle seems unattainable, until he meets a rich boy with a bicycle.
BEKAS (93 mins)
Dana and Zana are two homeless orphans in Iraqi Kurdistan under the oppressive regime of Saddam Hussein. After catching a glimpse of a Superman film screening they decide to set off to find the hero they believe has the power to fix all their problems. Their only hope for escape is to reach the United States of America and live with their friend “Superman”. But how do they get there? They have no money, no passports and their only means of transportation is a donkey! The journey takes them through increasingly risky adventures in an Iraq under the regime of Sadaam Hussein. Filled with moments of suspense and tenderness, the boys’ quest takes the audience through a hostile world viewed through the hopeful eyes of youth.
