Gounod's charming and tuneful St Cecilia Mass, typically French in character, perfectly complements Haydn's last composition, his 'Harmoniemesse' or 'Wind Band Mass' in B flat - in which Haydn, suspecting perhaps this would be his swan song, musters all his creative powers and produces a work that is almost Romantic in style, nicely bridging the gap to Gounod's period.
