Event information

The Mosaic Rooms are pleased to present two play readings by emerging Arab playwrights in collaboration with Sandpit Productions’ Bulbul Playwriting Competitions. The Bulbul Playwriting Competition invites writers from around the world to submit short plays in response to a theme about the Arab world and it’s surrounding regions. The first reading in our series is ‘The Cost of Eggs’ by Yamina Bakiri.

Set in war torn Syria, The Cost of Eggs centres around a mother who painstakingly tries to hold her family together as the country falls apart. Her belief that her son is alive is the foundation of her integrity and resilience. The Cost of Eggs is about loss and belief, fear and hope, hard bread and broken dreams, values, closeness and isolation, willpower and its limits, trying and failing, suffering and choices. It is about the ordinary life and the extraordinary resilience of the Syrian people.

Yamina Bakiri is a neuroscientist and writer. She is the author of the on-going one-woman show It’s Nothing Personal, which uses the stage as a playground to reflect on current affairs in the Middle East and Arab world from a woman’s perspective. Her vignette Little Red Riding Headscarf was selected for the Equal Writes Festival and staged at the Tristan Bates Theatre. She wrote The Cost of Eggs in response to the on-going conflict in Syria, where the only losers are the Syrian people.

Sandpit Productions is a non-profit arts organisation, which creates inspiring, high participatory events for local communities. By providing platforms for presenting and discussing the diverse creative cultures of the Middle East, North Africa and their diasporas, their aim is to create spaces of learning and cross-cultural understanding. Sandpit organized Brighton’s first ever festival of Arabic music, film, dance and storytelling, held on the Royal Pavillion Grounds and supported by the Arts Council.
