One of the most successful and celebrated directors in the worlds of theatre film and opera Sir Nicholas Hytner talks to the celebrated playwright and screenwriter Alan Bennett about his life and work. Hytner has been director of the National Theatre since 2003 and has collaborated with Bennett on a number of highly significant and beloved plays including The Lady in the Van The Madness of King George and The History Boys. He also directed the film version of The History Boysand his major operatic directions including the recent Royal Opera House production of Verdi's Don Carlo. Bennett is a playwright screenwriter author and actor. He has written many well-known plays and screenplays including The History Boys The Madness of King George and the Talking Heads series of monologues.Following this event Hytner will be presented with the Bodley Medal which is awarded to those who have made a major contribution to the worlds of literature arts science and communication. Previous recipients include Peter Carey Alan Bennett Oliver Sacks Hilary Mantel and Ian McEwan. Presented by the Bodleian Libraries.
