Canadian fiddler, singer, and stepdancer April Verch grew up surrounded by living, breathing roots music and decided early on that she wanted to be a professional musician. She took that leap, and has now been performing for more than two decades, with her landmark 10th album recently released. A prodigious player and fiddle contest winner from an early age, her playing samples various traditions including bluegrass and folk as well as a range of tunes from across her native Canada.

Cody Walters (upright bass, clawhammer banjo) grew up in Kansas, and started playing upright bass while at college there in 1999. The sound of the instrument grabbed hold of him and never let go. He has since played in various bands, performing different styles of music, from bluegrass to old-time, jazz to Latin, folk and country. More recently he has added the clawhammer banjo to his roster of talents, and has been a member of the April Verch Band since 2007.

The latest recruit to the AVB is Baltimore based guitar whizz Lucas Chohany. Lucas began playing the guitar at the age of 12, studying composition and classical guitar at school and subsequently developing an interest in jazz and improvisation. Immersed in the local old-time and bluegrass music scenes in Baltimore since 2011, Lucas quickly became a highly sought-after sideman in the area. A fine addition to the April Verch Band, Lucas showcases his instrumental chops on mandolin as well as guitar.

The April Verch Band delivers a highly entertaining set featuring a mix of bluegrass and various folk traditions, with top drawer instrumental playing on guitar and banjo as well as the ever-present fiddle, plus some great harmony singing and spectacular step dancing. True North Music is excited to present the AVB in the Backroom at The Greystones, on their first visit to Sheffield.
