Event information

3 top class musicians grace our bookshop once more. Saturday 1st August.

Danni Nicholls:
From a young age, Danni Nicholls was soaking up American folk, country and rock n roll music from her Grandmother's record collection in her small home town of Bedford, UK. When she inherited her Uncle Heathcliff's 1963 Burns London Shortscale Jazz guitar (rumoured to have belonged to Billy Fury!) aged 16, all those influences came pouring back out in the form of her own original material and has been flowing ever since.
Danni met Producer Chris Donohue (The Civil Wars, Elvis Costello, Robert Plant) in London in 2011 through a mutual friend whilst Chris was in the UK playing bass with Emmylou Harris as one of her Red Dirt Boys. The pair hit it off and have now made two albums together with Chris at the helm and some of Nashville's finest musicians featuring on the tracks. Debut 'A Little Redemption' was released July 2013 on Transmission Recordings to critical acclaim. Credits on the albums include the legendary Al Perkins on Dobro (Bob Dylan, Gram Parsons, The Rolling Stones) Steve Fishell on Pedal Steel (Albert Lee, Willie Nelson, Linda Ronstadt) and Will Kimbrough (Jimmy Buffett, Todd Snider, John Prine)
Danni recently returned from making her second album in Nashville. 'Mockingbird Lane' features many members of the stellar cast from the first album and is due for official release be released in Autumn 2015. "My time in Music City working with these great, great musicians was a hugely inspirational and surreal experience. I had to pinch myself often to make sure it was actually really happening! It forced me to raise my game and push my boundaries. I've come away with two albums which I'm immensely proud of"
Armed with her trusty, 'weathered and worn' Tanglewood guitar, Danni has been touring far and wide for the past 8 years honing her craft in a live setting. A vibrant, spell-binding performer, Danni has ben invited to support many artists such as Todd Snider, Jolie Holland, Kim Richey, Jim Lauderdale, Angus and Julia Stone, Bobby Bare Jr, Otis Gibbs, Mark Olsen, Nell Bryden, Tift Merrit and Diana Jones. Danni's performances are guaranteed to melt your heart and the soles of your cowboy boots. Her passionate delivery, powerful, velvet voice and charmingly engaging between-song banter compel you to fall under her spell.

Gitta de Ridder:
Gitta grew up in the Netherlands and music was a big part of life from when she was very little. She played the violin and started to sing in the local children's-choir at 6 yrs old but was always singing and playing the piano even before that. At age 8 she stole her sister's English school books and started to learn English and wrote her first poems in English soon after. Somehow she felt more drawn to the English language as a poetic expressive set of words rather than her native language Dutch.

She started writing songs when she was 13 when she taught herself how to play guitar,
When she was 18 she moved away from home to study vocals and song-writing at The Rock-academy in Tilburg, a journey that took her from the Netherlands to Germany, to Italy, Greece, Ireland and the UK ending up in London in 2008 where she has lived ever since. After a journey of musical soul-searching in several bands she arrived back at her original girl-with-guitar setting early 2014 inspired by artists such as Iron & Wine, Ane Brun, Anais Mitchell and Fink feeling she is back to the root of her love for music. A story, a lyric, a melody and some chords and other sounds to help shape the song.
