NECTARINE No 9
Edinburgh pop laureate and ex-Fire Engine Davey Henderson formed the Nectarine No 9 in 1991, almost as a reaction to the entryist major-label project Win with which he'd seen out the Eighties. The Nectarines harked back to some of Davey's core influences - The Velvets and Beefheart, with an altogether spikier and more defiant attitude.
NN9 found a home on Alan Horne's reactivated Postcard label, someone else who was in no mood to compromise. By the time they recorded their second album proper, Saint Jack, NN9's distilled mug art was about as potent as it was ever going to get.
Compiling a vast array of pop culture references vaguely themed around a 1979 Peter Bogdanoich movie set in Singapore shot through with scenes from Edinburgh lowlife , 'Saint Jack' was a sprawling masterpiece, sadly unheralded upon it's release in 1995. Irvine Welsh has hailed Henderson as "a genius" and in a different dimension 'Saint Jack' could easily have been the soundtrack to Trainspotting.
A deluxe verison of 'Saint Jack' has just been released by Heavenly's 'Forever Heavenly' reissue imprint. The album will be revisited by the band in full at this unmissable show, unlikely to be repeated.
