Laurel Canyon Music are proud to present a concert of Folk and Country at one of London's most historic and intimate venues. We are bringing together some of the most exciting new stars for a very special night of music.
Jess Morgan is a songwriter's songwriter. She is constantly touring, constantly writing, constantly striving to be better. Inspired by storytelling songwriters like Nancy Griffith, the playfulness of Devon Sproule and upfront British voices like Billy Bragg, expect a collection of sublime roots music. Jess' live performances are famed for lots of heart, gusto and passion. Jess will be performing in her new Trio for our concert, as part of her UK tour.
Over the past few years Jess has been making a noise in the UK and further afield with a string of albums comprised of acutely observed, beautifully delivered country-folk ballads; song about travel, about people, about history, about love, about whatever the song needs. The songs are intimate, but not in that earnest, quiet way. There's fire in Jess' voice, the way it soars between notes like a bird in flight. It's intimate, but it's end of the night, lock-in at the bar, let's get the nice whiskey out, intimate.
'The Bournemouth EP' was released to critical acclaim in the summer of 2015 (including winning FATEA's EP of the year). The entire first run of CDs, dressed in tactile limited edition packaging, sold out in less than a day - a triumphant follow up to the third full-length album 'Langa Langa' which attracted the attention and the ears of the BBC Radio 2 Folk Show, Bob Harris Sunday, BBC 6 Music, Folk Radio UK, R2, Uncut and The Telegraph.
2016 will see the newly formed Jess Morgan Trio on the road - confirmed dates include St. Pancras Old Church in London and The Maddermarket Theatre in the group's hometown, Norwich.
"Something truly special....simply stunning." (Folk Radio UK)
'Making waves and turning heads....Inventive and pognant' (R2 Magazine)
"Musicianship dovetails well with her clever and understated song-writing" - The Telegraph
"Gorgeous country folk" - The Guardian
Jack Harris was a South by South-West showcasing artist at 17. He was also the youngest, as well as the only non-American person ever to win the New Folk song writing award at the Kerrville Folk Festival, Tex-as. Previous winners included Gillian Welch, Steve Earle and Devon Sproule.
Those days are gone, along with most of Jack's youth and vigour, but he's still pleased to find himself in such company. And he still writes literate, compassionate songs, about subjects as disparate as Caribbean drinking festivals, the colour of a potato flower and the lives of great poets like Elizabeth Bishop.
These have won him considerable acclaim. The Telegraph voted his album 'The Flame and the Pelican' #5 in their top 10 Roots/Folk albums of 2012. Q magazine praised his 'unique lyrical mind', and Maverick UK awarded the record its full 10/10 rating. His writing and performance has also led to a great relationship with the English Folk Dance and Song Society (EFDSS), through whom he has been the recipient of a creative bursary award to write new songs in the old Folk idiom.
Coping with the dramatic potential of the stage infinitely better than with the vicissitudes of real life, Jack is at his happiest when playing live. He has brought his music to a loyal, ever-growing audience, at festivals, venues and skating rinks across the world. On occasion he has opened for some of Folk's biggest names, including Anais Mitchell, Cara Dillon and Dick Gaughan. His live show is a riveting mix of song craft and theatrical story-telling, delivered with warm voice, dry humour and nimble, string-picking fingers. Jack's new album, 'The Wide Afternoon', produced by Gerry Diver (Sam Lee, Lisa Knapp, The Speech Project) will arrive in 2016.
"A priest of song" (Anais Mitchell)
'Gave me goosebumps' (Eric Taylor)
'Great songs, wonderful guitar playing' (Kate Campbell)
