MOLLY NILSSON (SWE)
Glasgow has become something of a second home for Berlin-based pop phenomenon Molly Nilsson. On the eve of the release of her last album, 2015’s Zenith, she headlined the CCA to ecstatic effect and 2016’s return promises more. Beginning in the mid 2000s by writing fragile, beautiful songs with limited means, Nilsson has evolved into one of the most pre-eminent pop stars in the underground. Put simply, Molly’s songs speak directly to the heart, lift the spirit, bridge the divide in all humans, and are delivered with a restrained skill that is utterly disarming. An expert in minimalism, Nilsson strips experiences and feelings to their core values and presents each song like a call to arms for the world’s lovers and losers.
GENEVA JACUZZI (USA)
Despite a fairly limited discography, Geneva Jacuzzi is a modern legend, an elusive chimera of Los Angeles. Not unlike Molly Nilsson in that she has built a personal mythology from a strictly DIY apparatus, Jacuzzi creates elaborate performances infected with myriad strands of pop cultural references, the degraded starlet, a Freudian nightmare writ large and caked in stage make-up. Jacuzzi’s gigs are legendary, a trashy amalgam of minimal wave, eroded synth bangers, high and toilet-concept performance art initiating a complicated relationship with the senses. This Geneva’s debut show in Glasgow.
LIBERATION (AUS)
Liberation is the alias of one David West, principal songwriter in Rat Columns, Rank/Xerox and Lace Curtain and former member of Total Control. A seasoned travelling wilbury, West’s discography crosses Blackest Ever Black, DFA, Software and soon Night School, though he is always difficult to set in stone. Liberation is a deconstruction of synth pop, R+B, 80s House music and an emotional fragility that lures the listener into West’s singular world of missed connections, night-time lovers staring across foggy bays, the untethered heart adrift in the modern world.
APOSTILLE (UK)
Apostille is the continued electronic explorations of Glasgow-based musician Michael Kasparis. Evolving and devolving simultaneously, Apostille presents a blown up personality, an image low-res in execution but high-res in rawness. With his releases, Kasparis searches the limits of the pop song, the head-drilling beat, the abstract, but in live setting the joie de vivre is continually threatening to overcome any sense of balance and subtlety. Indeed, an Apostille performance is so off-balance it seems to be in perpetual teeter.
