We're really looking forward to welcoming Jet McDonald (lead writer of Boneshaker Magazine, Cyclist and Philosopher) to the next Bike Lounge.

In addition to being lead writer for Boneshaker Magazine, Bike Lounge’s favourite cycling read (www.boneshakermag.com if you’ve not had the pleasure yet), Jet has always been part of the alternative bicycle scene in Bristol, working with Bristol Bike Festival, Bristol Bike Project and Sustrans, the organisation behind the National Cycle Network. His non-fiction work is published in The Idler, a collection of radical essays. He is a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrist’s special interest group in philosophy.

Jet offers an enlightening, multi-layered talk that applies philosophy to modern life conundrums, using the experience of a bicycle journey and the components of a bicycle as metaphors to help us understand philosophy - and therefore ourselves!

In 2010 he spent a year cycling from Bristol to India, which has lead to his current book project, 'Mind is the Ride'.

His talk will be based on 'Mind is the Ride', in which he uses the perspectives or ‘gears’ of philosophy to describe what goes on in the mind of a cyclist. As he cycles from Bristol to the southern tip of India, each chapter and each component of the bike, fit together to make a kind of rolling jigsaw from Western to Eastern philosophy; thereby helping us to understand the pleasures and pains of cycling, and more generally, the pleasures and pains of life. Western philosophy has long divided the mind and body into separate halves whilst Eastern philosophy offers a more integrated sense of self. Mind is the Ride is the journey from this ‘part’ sense of ourselves to a more whole understanding, embodied in the bicycle ride itself.
