Shostakovich Symphony No.7
Philharmonia Britannica
Peter Fender, conductor
Doors open 7pm concert starts 7.30pm
Shostakovich's Seventh Symphony was mostly written during the horrific siege of Leningrad. This amazingly powerful work symbolised the resistance of the Russians against the Nazi onslaught and at its extraordinary performance in Leningrad by the starving musicians of the Leningrad Radio orchestra it gave renewed hope to that city's citizens. As often with Shostakovich the work works on different levels. Without a doubt it was also a reaction to Stalin's brutality, and perhaps for us it represents a cry of defiance against dictators of all types at all times.
