The brainchild of legendary Madness saxophonist Mr Lee 'Kix' Thompson, The Lee Thompson Ska Orchestra were formed, in the back streets of Hackney, in the early months of 2011. They came together from parts of North, East, South and West London, with their common denominator being music and, in particular, those good old Ska & Reggae riddims that burst out of Jamaica in the mid to late 1960s. Along with his usual saxophone duties, Thompson takes on the lead vocals, in a hand-picked line up, which features fellow Madness original Mark 'Bedders' Bedford on bass, as well as the cream of the musicians that Thompson has worked with during his 35 years in music.
The Ska Orchestra released their debut album 'The Benevolence of Sister Mary Ignatius' to rave reviews in 2013. Their first single 'Fu Man Chu' (featuring the vocal talent of reggae hit maker Bitty McLean) shook the radio waves that summer, and took the boys onto Jools Holland's 'Later' TV extravaganza, and an inclusion on David Rodigan's 'Masterpiece' album. May 2014 saw the release of their eagerly awaited second single 'Bangarang 2' and this time around, they were joined by Jamaican singing star Dawn Penn. The band spent a busy Summer touring the festivals, with Glastonbury being a highlight and Spring 2015 will see them go into the studio to record album number Two. With their madcap front man, bags of upbeat new takes on vintage classics and a sprinkling of new material, this is a band that are bringing Ska back to the forefront of popular music.
