Chris Bowden made his name on the London acid jazz scene in the 90s, but since his return to Birmingham he has honed a style on alto saxophone that brings together the fluency and harmonic sophistication of Charlie Parker with the cry and drive of the great soul players. 'Slightly Askew', an album on Ninja Tunes, shows how Chris can compose for and work with a range of instruments, sounds and rhythms. Similarly, for many years Chris's alto playing has been a key part of the sound of The Herbaliser.
