BRUCE RUSSELL
Bruce Russell is a key figurehead in the New Zealand music scene and one of the true Jedi Knights of the international underground. In 1987, alongside Michael Morley and Robbie Yeats, he formed The Dead C, a trio who took cues from No Wave and re-imagined it in the context of New Zealand’s South Island, resulting in a mode of blunt destructo rock that saw him described as “the Jimi Hendrix of no-technique” and a recorded output which has influenced pretty much every noise band that has come along since. Between 1985 and 1995, he ran Xpressway Records, a label that, alongside Flying Nun Records, captured the lo-fi experimental sounds coming out of New Zealand. He then launched Corpus Hermeticum, a label that did the same with an international roster. He is a regular contributor to the Wire magazine, writing with a goofy enthusiasm about experimental music of all stripes.
PETE UM
Like the turtle that travels through the cosmos carrying the world upon its back, so Pete Um is to the Cambridge music scene: omniscient, inscrutable, scaly. In honour of tonight’s show, he will be performing a rare set using reel-to-reel tape recorder and probably headphones. Expect hermetically-sealed analogue murk of the highest order.

C JOYNES
Some guy named Bruce Russell has gone on record as naming Histon’s own C Joynes as one the four guitarists in the world whose work he rates, alongside Bill Orcutt, Sir Richard Bishop, and Loren Connors’ Guitar Roberts. However, it is also worth mentioning that Bruce has never seen him play live.

Plus! DJ Ben Kingsbury will be spinning an all-antipodean set of NZ platters-that-matter.
