In The Moment presents top jazz vocalist Norma Winstone with Interplay (Alan Wakeman saxes, flute, Richard Baker trombone, Neil Hunter keyboards, Adrian Litvinoff basses, Dave Balen drums, percussion). The concert is presented in association with International Jazz Day.
“Winstone is not only a marvel when blending wordlessly with the other melody instruments, but she is the most subtle of interpreters of a lyric.” - Peter Bacon, The Jazz Breakfast
“Right now, she is at the peak of her form… there is no jazz singer in the country to touch her.” - Alyn Shipton, The Times
Norma Winstone has been prominent in British and European jazz since she first attracted attention in the late 60s when she shared the bill at Ronnie Scott’s with Roland Kirk. Equally at home singing jazz standards or using the voice in more experimental ways, she has been associated with many on the British jazz circuit, including Mike Westbrook, Michael Garrick, Joe Harriott, John Surman, Kenny Wheeler, Mike Gibbs, John Taylor, as well as numerous European and American musicians. Her group “Azimuth”, with Wheeler and Taylor, was described by writer Richard Williams as “one of the most imaginatively conceived and delicately balanced of all contemporary chamber jazz groups”.
Her recordings have consistently received critical acclaim; “Manhattan in the Rain” (1997) was described by The Observer’s Dave Gelly as “A delectable set of songs....masterly and enthralling”; Don Heckman of the Los Angeles Times regarded “Like Song, Like Weather” (1998) as “...a superb example of state-of-the-art, imaginative, virtually beyond-definition singing”; “Amoroso...only more so”, (2006) with Stan Tracey & Bobby Wellins: “standards-reinvention as it should be done” – John Fordham, The Guardian.
Norma’s numerous awards started with being voted top singer in Melody Maker Jazz Poll 1971 and have included Best Vocalist in BBC Jazz Awards, Honorary Member of the Royal Academy of Music, Parliamentary Jazz Award for Best Vocalist, and many more, not forgetting an MBE in 2007 in recognition of services to British Jazz.
In recent years she has worked with Italian pianist Glauco Venier and German saxophonist Klaus Gesing, recording several CDs for the ECM label, of which “Distances” (2008) was awarded top Jazz Vocal CD from Academie Du Jazz in France, a four and a half star review in Downbeat Magazine and a Grammy nomination. As Duncan Heining wrote in Jazzwise Magazine: “The sense of unity and coherence of mood, atmosphere and imagination that pervades these 10 tracks is exceptional.” Norma also works with Nicki Iles in the group “The Printmakers”.
Accompanying Norma this time are bassist Adrian Litvinoff’s highly respected group Interplay in performances of their own compositions and some carefully selected jazz standards.
Before the concert at 5.00pm there will be a free public talk entitled "Miles Davis and Doo Bop: Jazz meets Hip Hop" by Dr. Roger Fagge, Associate Professor, University of Warwick. In The Studio, Jephson Gardens, Leamington Spa CV32 4AA leamiron@gmail.com
