Our last concert before our short summer break features the amazing talent of Julian Dawson. It will be held in the Crawford Chapel of Wigan Parish Church.
Songwriter, singer, musician, author and producer...Julian recently celebrated his 40th year on stage and is still actively pursuing \'the best job in the world\' with undiminished vigour.
Last year\'s acoustic solo CD Living Good, produced in Nashville by soul legend Dan Penn, was his 23rd album. A quirk in his career path has meant that he is better known in Europe and North America than in his own country, despite TV appearances on \'Later with Jools Holland\' (with Richard Thompson), festival appearances at Cambridge, Glastonbury, and Cropredy and constant touring.
Equally at home in folk, blues (he is a world-class harmonica player), country music and classic pop songwriting, he has charted a cheerfully eclectic path through all these genres, but always with an original and instantly recognisable voice.
His recordings and songwriting credits feature unlikely appearances from a host of amazing artists and colleagues: Richard Thompson, Lucinda Williams, Dan Penn, Nicky Hopkins, Gene Parsons, Little Feat, Martin Carthy, the Roches and even Duane Eddy.
He was a member of Plainsong with Iain Matthews for 20 years, wrote an acclaimed biography of piano giant Nicky Hopkins and has produced albums for several colleagues, notably country legend Charlie Louvin of the Louvin Brothers.
He has guested on albums by Del Amitri, Gerry Rafferty and a host of other artists and friends. He brings with him his strikingly powerful voice, an apparently bottomless supply of great songs, his virtuoso harmonica playing and a stage presence that will grab you from the first note he sings. He will send you home feeling better than when you came!
‘Dawson hit the States like a brick through a plate-glass window. When he finished, the room was silent and everyone stopped what they were doing and glued their ears to one of the most startling, marvelous performances I’ve witnessed. A must-see act.’ (Austin American Statesman, SXSW)
