Winners of the 2008 Radio 2 Jazz Award for best album, Get The Blessing are a unique nu-jazz/post-jazz/mixed-up jazz/messed-up jazz/is it really jazz? quartet, made up from the former rhythm section of seminal Bristolian Trip-Hoppers Portishead (drummer Clive Dreamer and bass guitarist Jim Barr) and two of the UKs leading jazz’s lights - trumpeter Pete Judge and tenor saxophonist Jake McMurchie.
As well as Portishead, these boys have earned their spurs by backing names as diverse as Robert Plant, Peter Gabriel, Roni Size, Goldfrapp and The Super Furry Animals. Is there such a thing as good ‘jazz rock’? Since the 1970s it has become a weighted term with some seriously negative connotations, luckily if Get The Blessing call themselves anything, they would call theselves simply ‘jazz’ but if they did decide to pigeon hole themselves with the 'rock' label, they would stand head and shoulders above a sea of pretention and dross, two tags Get The Blessing could never be labelled with.
They could however at times be called Ska, Surf, a soundtrack to a mid-60’s Michael Cain movie, post-rock, funk, even (dare we say it?) fusion. A group that has been described as ‘straddling the ‘post-jazz’ and indie genres’ Get The Blessing have a genuine appeal that is across the board, loved by fans of catchy hooks and solid tunes as well as the most discerning jazz purists.
A scintillating live experience that will leave you amazed, questioning pre-concieved ideas of music genres, eye-opening and jaw-dropping, there is simply no other band in the world quite like Get The Blessing.
