Simon Gilliver read music at the University of Birmingham and later gained a Master’s Degree from Guildhall School of Music and Drama, specializing in the flute. Simon has since developed a widely varied career as a performer and teacher. He won the Albert Cooper International Flute Competition in 2006. Simon’s considerable orchestral experience includes a year as co-principal flute with Southbank Sinfonia, and he also plays regularly for the Orchestra of St Paul’s. Other recent engagements include work with the BBC Concert Orchestra, Oxford Philomusica and Bath Philharmonia.
Simon has been a member of a number of chamber groups, including Prima Volta, a group devoted to classical improvisation. Improvisation is a key strand of Simon’s work, and he teaches this at Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Simon is much in demand as a piano accompanist, playing extensively for recitals, exams and competitions. Simon is the Artistic Director of Bishop’s Stortford Sinfonia, an orchestra he founded in 2015.
Julia White gained her Postgraduate Advanced Diploma with distinction from Trinity College of Music, London (now Trinity Laban), and was subsequently a Junior Fellow at the college. During her studies, she was awarded a Chamber Music Prize, and was selected for the BBC Concert Orchestra Mentor Scheme. On completing her studies, Julia played with Santiago Philharmonic Orchestra, Chile on cor anglais and oboe, first as a guest soloist, and then as a permanent member of the orchestra. Here she gained wide experience of the opera, ballet and symphonic repertoire; most notably she played the extended cor anglais solos in Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde, receiving excellent reviews in the Chilean national press. In her performance of the Strauss Oboe Concerto in St. John’s, Smith Square, London, she was described as ‘an ideal interpreter’ of the work: ‘This was a most assured performance, full of warm lyricism and dazzling virtuosity’ – Bob Briggs, Music Web International.
