With weird guitar tunings, melodic but fiery slide work and a large catalogue of what he calls \'\'home-made\'\' songs, Raphael Callaghan is a survivor of the British blues boom of the \'60s.
His first recordings, as harmonica player with singer Jim James for the Liberty label in 1969, were produced by Tony McPhee.
Raphael, from Liverpool, has shared stages with Alexis Korner, Jo Ann Kelly and, in recent years, with Eric Bibb and Bonnie Raitt. But he\'s always stayed around his operating base on Merseyside.
Everything changed in 2017 when his solo album of original blues songs, Said And Done, received rave reviews in Acoustic magazine, Blues Matters, fRoots, Blues & Rhythm, Folk North West, Blues Blast (USA) and others, and tracks were championed by Paul Jones on his BBC Radio 2 blues show and on digital stations around the world.
Raphael backs his songs with guitar, picked or slide. Or he\'ll strip it all down to the bare bones of just voice and harmonica.
For this rare London gig, a special one-man show, he\'ll include a gospel set (with some of his originals in that genre) along with interpretations of songs by his all-time blues hero Skip James. There\'ll be plenty from Said And Done, and a batch of new songs that must be heard.
