Event information

A vibrant musical journey through Latin America with these three highly talented and experienced musicians and performers.

Sarah Williams (Oboe and Cor Anglais)

Sarah has lived in Cranleigh, Surrey since 1995 where she teaches and freelances with various orchestras and choral societies. She began her oboe studies with John Williams of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and then moved to Trieste, Italy to study with Alessandro Bonelli at the Tartini Conservatorio. For the past fifteen years she has played with the wind quintet ‘New Harmonie’ who work extensively in theSouth/South East. In 2007 New Harmonie gained charitable status, and its director, Dr Geoff Richardson has worked tirelessly to obtain funding to work with primary school children, children with special needs, and latterly people suffering with dementia. She met David while teaching at Farlington School and they made the decision to become a duo specialising in Latin American music. This has been an incredibly rewarding experience and she has thoroughly enjoyed working with David and benefitting from his expertise in this field.

David Caswell (Guitar)

David enjoys a varied career, teaching, performing and researching into the area of Latin American guitar music. Early studies were with his father, a keen amateur guitarist and pianist, and later with Anthony Macmahon. He entered the RCM in 1982 studying with Charles Ramirez and Patrick Bashford. He made his international debut in Buenos Aires in 1997 and has been a regular visitor to Latin America ever since. Visits to Venezuela and to Cuba introduced new and exciting repertoire, some of which will be heard in tonight’s concert. He says "It is a pleasure to present these duets with a musician of the calibre of Sarah Williams, the sounds of whose oboe and cor anglais are simply a delight . It is a pleasure too to share the concert with our very dear friend and colleague, the multi talented musician and poet, Ricardo Curbelo and we hope that you will enjoy tonight’s presentation."

Ricardo Garcia-Curbelo (Harp, Cuatro, Maracas, Vocals),

From an early age, Ricardo has been an eminent representative of the Latin American poetry and music culture on a wide variety of stages, both nationally and internationally. He first studied the harp at the Music Academy of Villavicencio, with Luis Alberto Curvelo, his brother and Director of the institution and whilst still a young man made his name as a poet in his native Colombia. He came to the UK in 1979 and has since given many performances both as a soloist and with many other accomplished musicians. His restless desire to contribute and to open new horizons for his culture, led him to construct a new Latin American harp, and with this instrument, the development and presentation of a unique new wave of poetic music.

On stage Ricardo presents a great combination of traditional pieces, together with many of his own compositions; vibrant, energetic and jazzy pieces contrasting with more classical, enchanting melodies and tender vocals. The sound of his Modelo Corvado harps adds to the uniqueness of his performances, which continue to take audiences by surprise!

Ricardo is equally delighted to be sharing this concert with such fine musicians as Sarah Williams and David Caswell. Tonight's performance will include compositions from his latest album "Espíritu Llanero / A Londres" (Llanero Spirit / To London).
