Event information

THE GLASGOW PHOENIX CHOIR is delighted to be performing our second concert of the weekend in aid of the Carers Trust in Killearn Kirk. The Glasgow Phoenix Choir rose out of the ashes of the world-famous Glasgow Orpheus Choir and this year celebrates 117 years of choral excellence – 67 years as the Glasgow Phoenix Choir and 50 years as the Glasgow Orpheus Choir. The choir flourishes under the guidance of our conductor Marilyn J Smith MBE and Cameron Murdoch, accompanist and depute conductor. The choir performs over 20 concerts per year and each involves a range of music from choral standards to new music and, in addition, we feature many delightful solo performances by choir members.

The Carers Trust works to improve support, services and recognition for anyone living with the challenges of caring, unpaid, for a family member or friend who is ill, frail, disabled or has mental health or addiction problems. They do this through a wide network of quality assured independent partners and through the provision of grants to help carers get the extra help they need to live their own lives. With locally based Network Partners they are able to support carers in their homes through the provision of replacement care, and in the community with information, advice, emotional support, hands on practical help and access to much needed breaks.

RECORDINGS Glasgow Phoenix Choir recordings receive regular play on local and national radio stations. Our latest recording is a special postcard CD of Scottish songs, recorded in St Andrew’s RC Metropolitan Cathedral, Glasgow. Proceeds from this CD benefit the St Andrew’s Hospice, Lanarkshire, which this year celebrates 30 years of service to the community and which is currently in need of refurbishment and restoration, to support patients and their families and St Andrew’s Metropolitan Cathedral, Glasgow.

Sponsorship by CO-OP FUNERALCARE allows the Choir to take on more fund-raising concerts for many worthy causes such as this and to travel further afield. Our most recent tour allowed us to take part in concerts to raise funds for several local charities in the Argyll area and for the Carers Trust and our latest CD was also made possible because of our sponsorship. The choir has itself raised over £1.5M for many charities in the 67 years of its existence – which resulted in the award of the Paul Harris Fellowship from Rotary International.
